About

The company's history

In 1982 Bob Alkema and Steve Marshal, with the help of friends, founded a small shipyard in Merceda, California. Initially their friends were betting on tugboats and did not lose out. Malibu Boats almost immediately began to receive 2-3 orders a week, and by 1984 the company was already firmly on its feet and had up to 8 orders a week.

In 1989, a second factory was opened in Tennessee, and by the end of the year Malibu Boats had produced more than 1,200 boats, winning the Powerboat magazine award for excellence.

A year later, the company acquired the Australian shipbuilding company Flightcraft. By 2002 Malibu Boats became one of the world's largest manufacturers of sports towboats.

In 2006 the yard was owned by its main investor, Black Canyon Capital. Although many yachting companies closed during the recession of the late 2000s, Malibu Boats, on the contrary, increased its market share.

In 2009, Malibu Boats launched the Axis Wake brand and moved its headquarters to Loudon, Tennessee.

By 2012, the company had taken 30% of the tugboat market and won 19 Boat of the «Year Awards and»31 Excellent «Product Quality Awards.

In 2014, the company held an IPO on the New York Stock Exchange, where it was valued at $300 million.

In July 2017, Malibu acquired its competitor Cobalt Boats for $130 million and included its CEO Paxson St. Clair on its board of directors.
