The first Volvo Ocean Race was held in Alicante waters

Teams that decided to take part in the Volvo Ocean Race competed in the race. The coastal race was held in the waters of the Spanish city of Alicante .

The winner of the competition was the Alvimedica team. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing finished in second place, with Mapre in third.

The mini-competitions will take place in other cities as well, with crews making stops at 11 ports over the course of the 3,839 nautical mile race, each of which will feature local waters.

The first leg will start from Alicante to Cape Town as early as 11 October. The estimated duration of the regatta is 9 months.

The Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015 season takes place on Volvo Ocean 65class monotype boats.

Seven teams are taking part: Alvimedica, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, MAPFRE, Team Brunel, Dongfeng Racing, Team Vestas Wind and the all-female Team SCA.
