Shipwreck rescuers have recover ed a cargo of $50 million worth of silver coins from the seabed. The coins were found on a ship that sank in 1942.

The passenger-cargo ship City of Cairo was carrying money from India to Britain to help the latter in World War II, but was sunk by a German submarine near St. Helena.

The search for the ship began back in 2011, but has only now been successful.

Deep Ocean Search had to dive to a depth of 5150 meters to locate the wreck and bring its contents to the surface. The ascent from such a depth is called a record.

The silver coins will be returned to the British treasury.
