US citizen Sonia Baumstein began a non-stop trans-Pacific voyage on Sunday, 7 June. The 30-year-old woman plans to cover 6,000 miles (9,656 km) in a 23-foot rowing boat. The vessel, made of Kevlar and carbon fiber, weighs 300 kg.

Sonja took off from Choshi Marina in Japan, with San Francisco as her final destination. It will take her about six months to complete the planned route.

Earlier women had not managed to cross the Pacific Ocean alone.

According to press reports, to set the record, Baumstein gained 18 kg of weight and 544 kg of provisions on her ship.

A previous attempt by a woman to cross the Pacific ended unsuccessfully: British woman Sarah Outen was forced to abandon her voyage on day 149 as her ship went astray.
