The Russian SB20 class championship has started

Russian Open SB20 Championship will be held in St. Petersburg on August 26-30. The competition is in its sixth year and this time twenty nine yacht crews are taking part in it. The first day, 26 August, is a preparatory and the race started on 27th.

Teams from eleven Russian cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Volgograd, Ekaterinburg, Saratov, Taganrog, Togliatti, Dolgoprudny, Istra and Primorsk) came to compete. In total, 92 athletes, including 7 women and 85 men, take part in races. The youngest competitors, Sergey Lukin and Andrey Malnev, - on 19 years, and the oldest, Victor Mitrofanov - 59.

The local team Team Nika, managed by Vladimir Prosikhin, was in the lead on the first racing day.

After the first day of the race Vladimir commented on the performance of his team: «I would not say that this victory was easy. Over the course of the race we varied tactics, increasing the gap from our pursuers».

Team Nika did not give up positions during the first race day, recording four first-place finishes.

Vadim Pushev's crew (RUS 3718, VIS Sailing Team) finished second three times and only in the final race of the day they finished seventh.

Moscow yachtsmen led by Vasily Grigoriev (RUS 3327) finished third.

Vasily confessed: «This is the first time we are competing in the Russian Championships, although we have already participated in the regattas in the Gulf of Finland, and even won prizes».

The race committee, especially the head referee, Vladimir Komel, will have a difficult job.

«Our first task is to work out all the actions of the Race Committee, - explains the head of the judging committee. - For example, the signposting on the course: we must correctly estimate its length so that the competitors keep to the reference time. It is also important to keep an eye on the wind and react to its changes».
