Feadship is preparing to launch the megayacht Joy. The 70-metre vessel was presented to an owner last week at the yard's docks in Kaaga.

The owner asked «to create something completely different from any other yacht». The Bannenberg & Rowell exterior styling team and Studio Indigo architects worked hard to ensure that this particular Feadship owner's wishes were realised.

Most Feadship yachts are built for experienced yachtsmen. But in this case the client was a complete novice yachtsman. Joy will be the first Feadship he has ever owned. This is a characteristic that the yard took into account in designing Joy.

«Joy is an example of what can be achieved by starting literally from scratch»," says Jan-Bart Verkiul, Feadship director.

For Bannenberg & Rowell Joy marks a new era in development: it is the first exterior project since the death of founder John Bannenberg in 2002. In the 2000s the company was mainly involved in interior design, in particular for the 12 Feadship yachts. The Joy's exterior uses concave shapes and different textures to create a unique look.

A great deal of attention has been paid to the outdoor seating areas and their relationship with the indoor areas, for example the beach club can be reached through a door on the transom that rises above head level, or through sandwich doors on the aft deck, which serve as a platform in the closed position and as sofa backs in the open position.

The interior spaces of the yacht can easily be extended by simply opening the glass doors and combining them with the outside seating areas, the so-called air-conditioned conservatories. In this way the master cabin, main deck saloon and bridge deck lounge can be enlarged.

The interior of Joy uses 250 different finish materials.

A spiral central wooden staircase flanking a glass lift that connects all decks is one of the interior highlights.

In addition to the master stateroom, there are two VIP suites and three guest staterooms. The Owner's deck is dedicated to the owner. There will be living quarters for 19 crew members.

The boat is equipped with two MTU 16V4000 M53L engines. Maximum speed is 16 knots. At a cruising speed of 12 knots, the yacht can travel 4500 miles without refuelling.
