Thomson, who had been neck and neck with leader Armel Le Cléac throughout the race, lost 16 hours to the Frenchman. Le Cléacq set the Vendee Globe record on January 19, circumnavigating the globe in 74 days, 3 hours 35 minutes and 46 seconds.
The British yachtsman announced after the end of the regatta that he intends to participate in Vendee Globe again next year and this time to fight for the first place.
