British woman Bethany Smith, 18, fell from the mast of the sailing yacht Germania Nova while she was cleaning it. The accident happened while the yacht was anchored at Erroll Flynn Marina in Jamaica.

According to local media, the rope to which the girl was tied untied, and she fell to the deck. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with multiple injuries, but she could not be saved.

The young woman had been working on Germania Nova for over a year and was not the first time she had done the job of clearing the mast.

To help Bethany Smith's family cover the costs of the tragedy, a crowdfunding campaign has been launched on GoFundMe. As of this writing, $12,900 has been raised - more than the campaign's stated goal.

Niall Robinson, a partner in the charter firm Hill Robinson, which operates Germania Nova, has expressed condolences to Bethany Smith's family, friends and colleagues, and noted that Hill Robinson and the owners of the ship «are doing all they can to support family and friends, and of course, an investigation into the tragedy is already underway».

«No further statements will be released until the results of the investigation are known»," he stressed.

Germania Nova is a 55.42 meter two-masted sailing yacht launched by the Spanish shipyard Factoría Navale Marín in 2011. She has a passenger capacity of 10 and a maximum crew capacity of 13.
