15 August in Rio was supposed to be the race of 470, Laser and 49er classes. As a result, the 470 and Laser classes were cancelled due to weather conditions, while the 49er races took place - with New Zealanders Peter Burling and Blair Tuke leading by a wide margin. As the fleet returned to shore - some after hours of waiting on the water and the cancellation signal, others after successfully completing the race - a squall came in. The wind increased from 11 to 40 knots in a matter of minutes, capsizing several boats, among them New Zealand's Star Blow. The women's crew 470, representing Germany, had their sails torn to shreds.
