On June 19, the yacht Northabout of British traveler David Hempleman-Adams left Bristol to circumnavigate the North Pole counterclockwise. The purpose of the expedition was to show how much the ice cover area in the Arctic had decreased. The Northabout crew consisted of eight people, including two Russians: skipper Nikolay Litau and first mate Denis Davydov. On September 15, after 90 days and 8,041 miles, Northabout completed her mission, arriving in Upernavik, Greenland. She became the first British-flagged yacht to sail the Northwest and Northeast Seaway in one season. And Nikolay Litau was the first skipper to sail both routes twice.
