Three in a boat, eating seagull.

Three teenagers spent 50 days drifting in the Pacific Ocean...

Not long ago a New Zealand fishing boat saved three teenagers who spent 50 days in the Pacific on a tiny aluminium boat. Boys aged 14 to 15 years old drifted 800 miles from the tiny Atafu Atoll, where they were carried away, to a point southwest of Fiji where they were found.

The poor fishermen's diet consisted of occasionally passing coconuts and a miracle caught seagull (!). By the time they were rescued, they had already started to drink sea water from their thirst.

Their boat took them away from the atoll as early as 5 October and after a major search operation that failed, the boys were declared dead. More than 500 people came to the memorial service for the three missing.

The hapless fishermen were unbelievably lucky: a boat that had stumbled upon them in the ocean found itself in that area only because it had accidentally lost its usual course a little earlier.

Despite heavy weight loss and sunburns, all three rescued men were brought aboard in good mood and not bad physical condition.
