St. Petersburg holds the palm of the championship in activity on the international sailing arena. There are VOR and Sails of the White Nights. A new international competition St.Petersburg Challenge 2010 will be added to this list since 2010.

It is organized by the company Sail and Race, which has been holding the Baltic Spring Cup and DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge since 2004 (the last one since 2003). Now it seems that both events have stopped or at least suspended their existence and a new offshore race with a start in St. Petersburg on 18 July was born in their place.

The race will be held under IRC rules. The Finish will be accepted in German Kiel. From the requirements for competitors it is only known that the boat must not be less than 40 feet long.

The organizers report that the St.Petersburg Challenge 2010 will be a qualification race for the more prestigious Royal Ocean Racing Club's Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race 2010.
