The Swiss bank Credit Suisse Yacht Club of Monaco, of which the Prince of Monaco Albert II personally is President, has established the Superyacht Eco Association (SEA) index. This index will help to estimate the carbon footprint of a yacht depending on its construction - the amount of CO2 emissions when carrying one passenger per nautical mile.
The assessment results will form the basis for the SEA rating and, over time, for the new global industry standard. Initially 130 yachts from 40 to 140 metres in length were entered into the database.
Owners, captains and other industry professionals can enter ship data in an online calculator that is available on the SEA index website. The calculations take into account the year of construction, length, gross tonnage, maximum number of guests on board, maximum speed and detailed engine and generator data. After processing the information, the boat receives from 0 to 5 stars «.
This first evaluation stage is free of charge and the results do not bind owners to anything. It is assumed that it will be possible to use these boats that are still under construction, which will allow you to make changes to the project if you wish.
If the yacht is found to meet certain criteria, an additional more detailed audit can be carried out for a fee, which will allow to obtain a certificate of compliance and the SEA flag. The boat will then take its place in the official rating and this rating (at least for now) is not publicly available.
