Category Description

Sportfishers are boats designed for offshore and deep-sea fishing. Anglers use rods with thick lines and powerful reels that are inserted into special pockets in the sides (bulwarks) of the boat for trolling and jig fishing. These fishing methods assume that the boat is moving. This is how blue marlin and tuna are caught.

For fishers to be able to lift the heavy catch on board, sportfishers have large open areas at the stern and on the bow that are kept clear of any unnecessary items.

Some sportfish boats are equipped with tuna towers – tall aluminum structures used to spot fish at a distance, often with a second set of helm controls.

Kill boxes are a popular choice for optional equipment. These are large boxes with very cold water for storing freshly caught fish. In such water, the blood of the fish rushes from the muscle tissues to the organs, leaving the meat whiter and more delicious. Built-in tackle boxes to perfectly organize tackle and fishing gear, and mounted bait cutting boards for preparing bait or filleting fish are also common options on sportfish boats.

Big-catch fishing requires getting far away from the shore and staying in the open sea for a long time, so sport fishers usually have large fuel tanks and class A seaworthy hulls that feel confident on big waves. Thanks to their powerful motors, most sportfishers have a top speed of around 30 knots and can quickly outrun a storm if needed. Although, of course, fuel consumption in this case will not be eco-friendly at all.

The so-called convertibles are the elite of the sportfisher family. These boats have a recognizable profile with a long bow, a flybridge and a tall tower with ladders above it. Convertibles usually exceed 40 feet in length and are well suited not only for deep sea fishing but also for family cruising. Less hardcore than regular sportfisher boats and much more comfortable, they have well-equipped galleys and saloons to enjoy today’s fresh catch.

Below deck, convertibles have several comfortable cabins with heads. Many owners live on their boats for weeks, traveling along the coastline to take part in fishing competitions. A crew cabin is a desirable option here, as such boats are usually piloted by a hired professional.

How are sportfisher yachts built?

Old sportfishers were made of wood, but nowadays wooden sportfish boats are a very small niche segment of the market. Modern sportfish yachts have fiberglass hulls. The process of building one is no different than the process of building virtually any fiberglass boat. Layers of fiberglass (sometimes mixed with carbon fiber) are laid into the plastic mold and infused with high-quality vinylester resin. Between the layers of fiber, the foam core is laid that is completely encapsulated by the resin. For example, Hatteras, one of the leaders of the sportfisher segment, uses the Divinycell foam core in its hulls. Stringers and bulkheads are vacuum infused and bonded to the hull forming a strong, stiff structure.

Sportfish boats are meant to be fast; that is why most of them have V-shaped planing hulls.

What types of engines are used on sport fish boats ?

Most modern sport-fishers are powered by inboard turbocharged diesel engines. MTU, MAN, Cummins, Volvo Penta powertrains are among the most popular choices due to smooth operation, durability, long service life, and reliability.
