Category Description
Vessels that are over 100 feet (30 meters) in size are commonly referred to as superyachts. Motor superyachts may vary in size, hull and superstructure material, engine type and power. Practically, all vessels of this type are piece products : they are made to order under the individual project. Only a small percentage of these yachts are built as a part of existing projects where a base model is offered to the client and then customized with individual equipment, exclusive interiors and/or layouts. As a rule, yachts that are not longer than 115–130 feet are built on the basis of the existing model range.
The largest motor superyacht in the world today is the 180m Azzam, which was launched by Lurssen Shipyard in 2013. She pushed off the podium Eclipse of Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, the 163-metre vessel built by the other coryphaeus of the superyacht market, the Blohm + Voss shipyard. Oceanco, Nobiskrug, Heesen and other superyacht yards also specialize in building motor superyachts.
