Category Description
Yachts over 100 ft or 30 m long are traditionally called superyachts or megayachts. Sailing yachts of this type can vary in size, type of rigging, hull material, superstructure and spars. Some large sailboats are called maxi yachts. The difference in their purpose is that maxi yachts are designed for racing, while superyachts are more likely used for relaxing holidays.
A small percentage of these boats are built as part of a ready-made project – the client is offered a basic model which is then individually fitted with equipment and for which exclusive interiors and/or layouts are created. As a rule, yachts of up to 115–130 ft in length are built on the basis of the production-standard project.
Most of the megayachts are individual piece projects, exclusive right from their drawings to the individual items and supplies on board. The innovation in some of the yacht projects is so impressive that even after years one’s interest in these yachts does not diminish as is the case with the "Maltese Falcon".
Among the largest boats, there are replicas of famous yachts of the past – for example, "Atlantic yacht". In the list of the largest sailing yachts, the creations of the Italian company Perini Navi are the most in number. Sailing megayachts are also built by Vitters, Alloy Yachts, Royal Huisman, Baltic Yachts and others.
