Category Description

A wooden sailing yacht is one of the oldest ways to travel by water in the history of mankind. The oldest sailing ship found, the "Cyrene" , is over two thousand years old. The most common material used in the construction of wooden hulls for sailing yachts is mahogany (Honduran mahogany, Sapele or Red cedar). Hulls of modern wooden sailing yachts are covered with fiberglass and filled with epoxy resin and polyurethane, which makes them more durable and protects them from rotting.

Wooden sailing yachts differ by the type of rigging and sizes: yawls, tenders, ketches, cutters, schooners and the like. In Russia wooden sailboats are built at the Varyag shipyard, which offers copies of Russian historic vessels — riverboats of the XI–XV centuries and sailboats of XIV–XVIII centuries.

Among the world-famous manufacturers of wooden sailboats are Spirit, Artisan Boatworks and Working Sail. The boats of these brands are handcrafted. Classic wooden sailing yachts participate in specialized regattas such as theMonaco Classic Week, LesVoiles de Saint-Tropez or Panerai series. Some yachtsmen build their own wooden sailboats, others find and restore old hulls.
