On September 3rd a joint Russian-Chinese expedition will depart from Murmansk with the aim of sailing through Russian part of the Arctic and finish in Qingdao, China in October 2015.

The project is overseen by Chinese offshore yachtsman Guo Chuan, who became famous for his solo circumnavigation in 2012. Shortly before the expedition, Guo Chuan purchased a 100-foot trimaran from Frenchman Francis Joyon IDEC. In his opinion, voyage catamarans are best suited for passing through the harsh northern seas. The catamaran was later renamed «Qingdao-China».

The team will also include yachtsmen from the USA, France, Norway and Russia, represented by polar yachtsman Sergey Nizovtsev, who set a record in 2012 by sailing around two poles in one trip.

This expedition is going to pass the high-latitude northern route in the corridor of 78-82 degrees of the northern latitude. Besides, they will try to pass the northernmost point of Russia, Cape Arctic, with possible entry to 85 degrees of the northern latitude.

Trimaran expedition «Qingdao-China» is to draw world attention to the problem of environmental protection, global climate change and melting of the Arctic ice, as well as to demonstrate the economic benefits of using the high-latitude northern maritime route.
