A 61-year-old Scotsman and a 49-year-old Irishwoman were killed in a yacht crash on the west coast of South Africa north of Cape Town.

Scotsman George Mills was sailing his 47-foot yacht Tara from Langebaan to Cape Town. In heavy fog, the boat ran aground and then crashed onto rocks.

Mills was unable to survive. One of the two passengers, Irish-born Rachel Daly, also died in the collision. Her husband, PJ, managed to make it to shore and call for help despite a head wound.

It is not known what caused the boat to run aground and it is also unknown if it capsized before it ran aground. The local authorities are investigating.
