Anatoly Loginov's crew Annapurna from Moscow Region Yacht Club «Pirogovo» became European champion in the Dragon class.

The competition was held from 18 to 22 July in St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

The fate of the champion title was decided in the last two races: three crews in the overall standings were separated by 3 points, and at least three more teams had a chance to win medals.

The intrigue was heightened by the prospect of throwing away the worst result.

By the last race German Stefan Link had all the chances to win: he led the table with 18 points, while Loginov, who came tenth, had 27 points, Markus Brennecke of Germany had 27, Markus Wieser, racing under the UAE flag, had 28.

Link needed to get into the top six in the last race to win, but he unexpectedly retired after the second mark.

«We did the best we could on the first tack and after it and took too much risk. We had to keep an eye on three boats - Markus Wieser, Markus Brennecke and Anatoly Loginov. But it so happened that we could not keep up with them, and eventually we decided to just quit the race», - said a German.

Anatoly Loginov finished fifth in the last race.

According to the results of all nine races of the championship Annapurna won as many points as Stefan Link's crew, but in the asset RUS 27 was a victory on July 19, in the second race of the Championship, and that is what made the Annapurna crew the Champion of Europe 2016.

«In the last race we were playing our own game and, to be honest, we stopped counting points. Already on the last descent we started to watch what our opponents were doing and get defensive. And before we were in the right position, we went very freely», - said the skipper of the Russian team.

Second place in the overall ranking was taken by Stefan Link, the third place was taken by Markus Brennecke.
