British shipyard Spirit Yachts has published the first photos of its new flagship Spirit 111, currently under construction in Suffolk.

The 33.9m yacht is the largest wooden sloop in recent history since the legendary J-Class.

As the image below suggests, British MP Mark Garnier, who oversees international trade issues, recently visited the construction site. Far left in the same photo is Spirit Yachts chief designer Sean McMillan, who drew the exterior lines of Spirit 111.

The interiors for the giant sloop are being designed by Rhoades Young. The products of this collaboration can be seen on the rendering. The interiors lack sharp angles and are dominated by oval and round forms while the beds in the cabins, which can accommodate up to eight people, are raised off the floor and enclosed in round wooden cocoons.

It is known that the Client of Spirit 111 is only thirty and intends to spend a lot of time onboard while keeping the fuel consumption low.

To achieve this she will be fitted with 160 kW Torqeedo electric motors and four BMW i3 lithium batteries which can be recharged whenever the boat is under single sail. Powered by these engines, the Spirit 111 will cruise at up to 11 knots. The owner, however, is more interested in the efficiency of the sails and plans to equip the boat with a Lewmar hydraulic system and a full set of sails from OneSails.

Spirit 111 will be 6.4 meters wide and 4.05 meters deep with a total displacement of 65 tons with a full load. The boat is being built in wood-epoxy composite on a stainless steel frame and will comply with RINA standards. It is planned to be launched in summer 2019.
