One of the largest sailing superyachts in the world, Oceanco's 106m Project Solar, is undergoing sea trials near Rotterdam. The boat was launched in autumn 2016; its expected delivery date to the owner is April 2017.
Dykstra Naval Architects, who worked on the Maltese Falcon, is responsible for Solar's naval architecture. Like Maltese Falcon, Solar is equipped with three pivoting masts (DynaRig sails). She has a steel hull with a Pacman type breakwater bow and an aluminium superstructure.
Her exterior and interior have been designed by the well known Italian studio Nuvolari-Lenard. The designers have managed to keep the exterior elegant and the volume of the vessel at 2700 BRT. She can accommodate 12 passengers in 6 cabins.
Solar has twin Caterpillar engines that enable her to cruise at 17.5 knots, but the engines can also be switched off to run on solar power alone if desired. Overall, the yacht is replete with a variety of environmentally friendly solutions.
