A 24-metre supercharged catamaran is being built in Germany to set a new world record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe by motorboat. The German team's ambitious voyage is set to begin in 2020.

The project, dubbed The Fast One, was designed by Hendrik Weber.

The current record for the fastest circumnavigation of the globe belongs to New Zealand sailor Pete Bethune, who in 2008 circumnavigated the earth in 60 days 23 hours and 49 minutes aboard his 24-metre trimaran Earthrace.

The Fast One team expects to improve on that achievement by more than 20 days. Their confidence is based on the fact that the boat has a unique hydrofoil design developed by Bremen University professor Dr. Hoppe.

The foils will provide cruising at 40 knots in all weather conditions.

What speed the boat will reach is yet to be revealed.

Besides, The Fast One is equipped with an advanced scanning device which will search for any potentially dangerous objects on its way around the land.

The International Union of Motor Sport (UIM) has been entrusted with the task of setting the record so The Fast One will sail around the Suez and Panama Canals, as well as crossing the Equator and North Tropic.

Another contender to make the fastest circumnavigation of the globe is the Britannia team led by Alan Priddy. The Britannians plan to start the voyage in October of this year. Their 24m monohull designed in collaboration with designer Bob Cripps has more modest cruising speeds of just 22 knots. However, she is fitted with an emulsifying fuel system that can save up to 30% fuel by mixing it with seawater.
