Syndicate from Sardinia have officially confirmed their participation in the 36th America's Cup «» to be held in Auckland, New Zealand in March 2021. The Italian team is fourth in line for the Auld Mug alongside compatriots Luna Rossa, Ben Ainslie's Ineos Team UK and representatives of New York-based American Magic Yacht Club.

With entries open from January 1 and less than a month to go before the competition closes, only four teams have officially confirmed their participation from an anticipated ten.

After June 30 teams will have the opportunity to join the ranks of contenders for the Cup, but for this will have to pay an additional fee of $ 1 million.

The Sardinian syndicate is based on local sailing team Adelasia of Torres which has performed well in several international regattas around the Mediterranean including a victory in the Giraglia Rolex Cup.

The sailing crew will be headed by Duccio Colombi, winner of 11 Italian sailing championships in different classes, two European Championships and four World Championships.

The syndicate's starting budget of $103 million is far more modest than the sponsorship contribution from their British rivals, but the Italians intend to raise additional investment.

The team's AC75 monohull will be built in carbon fiber at the shipyard in Olbia. And the training base will be located on the island of La Maddalena in the facilities prepared for the «G8 Summit», the opportunity to use which has been made available by the Government of Sardinia.

«The aim of the Sardinia Challenge is to win, to bring the Cup to Sardinia, to reduce participation costs and then to host an incredible regatta in a location that for years has been the summer haven for a fleet of racing superyachts. The America's Cup will be the apogee of the event»," said Sardinian team officials.
