French shipyard Jeanneau , in collaboration with designer Philippe Briand, has unveiled the 13.4m Sun Odyssey 440 family cruiser.

Briand has been working with Jeanneau since 2012 on the Sun Odyssey range. However, in creating the new model, he has succeeded in rethinking the naval architecture and exterior design in a way that further enhances comfort on board.

When creating the hull form of the SO 440, the designer was inspired by the image of blunt-nosed offshore racing boats, which have a wide front end. The reshaping of the forward hull shape allowed for a significantly increased master suite area, which on the SO 440 is the most spacious in class.

«At the stern of today's boats it's hard to find free space, because owners expect this area to be very versatile.» I decided to look for unused space in the bow, inspired by the Mini 6.50 with its beveled bow, to bring the maximum width forward and increase interior volume without sacrificing performance," explains Brien.

The designer made the descent of the deck toward the stern so seamless that the need for steps or dividers separating the deck from the cockpit was eliminated.

The cockpit has sofa transformers on both sides that can be transformed into large sun pads by folding out the coamings, which are also the backs of the sofas, and adding a section on the other side. With the extended coamings the cockpit area increases by 330%.

The table between the two convertible sofas also unfolds to form a comfortable dinette. The central part of the table includes a compartment for a portable refrigerator.

Jean-Marc Piaton is the interior designer of the new SO 440. Among the salon's highlights are a spacious amidships galley and a comfortable, large mess table with plenty of storage space.

The layout provides two or three cabins and two bathrooms with showers.
