The largest international regatta for students will start in St. Petersburg on August 15

The St. Petersburg State University Alumni Association is organizing for the fourth time in the Northern Capital the international student regatta «St. Petersburg State University Open Cup». The competition will take place in the waters of the Neva near the Peter and Paul Fortress from August 15 to 18.

To participate in the race young yachtsmen from Universities of China (Qingdao University), Great Britain (Oxford , Cambridge, Imperial College), France ( EDHEC Business School ), Lithuania ( Vilnius University), Germany (Clausthal Technical University), Austria (Graz Technical University) and Netherlands(Delft University) will arrive toSt.Petersburg. Another 20 teams will come from various parts of Russia.

«Today our regatta is the largest sailing competition for students in the world. It is also a very important element of the international dialogue and student diplomacy», - says Denis Kotlyarov, project supervisor and former captain of the Saint-Petersburg State University sailing team.

Traditionally, the four-day competition will end with the Alumni Race.

There will be an extensive on-shore programme for spectators on HareIsland. Here you can watch documentaries about famous races and great geographical discoveries, lectures about the history of sea traditions of St. Petersburg. Besides, on the beach of Peter and Paul Fortress there will be the training grounds where you can learn the nautical terms and how to arm a ship.

One of the main events of the coastal program will be round table «Round trip - torture or adventure? » , to be held on the evening of August 17.

During it everyone will be able to listen to stories of Igor Zaretsky, the only Russian participant of the round-the-world non-stop singles race Golden Globe Race , the first Russian yachtsman who took part inRussian yachtsmen first participant of miniTransat single-handed transatlantic race Irina Gracheva, and also the founder of the Russian Association of yachts of SB20 class and the participant of round-the-world regatta Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 Oleg Zherebtsov.
