Friends and family of the sailors from the Cheeki Rafiki sinking will take part in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race to honour the victims. The decision has been taken as one of the members of the infamous crew, 21-year-old skipper Andrew Bridge, was planning to take part in the race.

«We want to take part to honour his memory. He should have been with us now and Cheeki Rafiki should have been our competition boat»," said the athletes.

If the team is destined to win, the prize money will go to charity - donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, which supports sailors.

In addition, acquaintances of the lost crew are collecting donations on their own, via the Internet: with their help RNLI has already received about £20,000.

Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland Race starts on August 10, and competitors from 11 countries will take part in the competition.

The Beneteau First 40.7 sank on her way from Antigua to Europe several weeks ago. It took rescuers and volunteers a week to find the overturned hull of Cheeki Rafiki with a life raft on board. The search for the yachtsmen was abandoned.
