The Rolex Sydney Hobart Race kicked off in Sydney on 26 December. Participants of the regatta had to cover 628 miles and finish in Hobart. Stormy winds took out almost a third of the boats. The first to reach Hobart was the maxi-sailer Comanche. It came in with a broken rudder and centreboard. Because of the damage, Comanchi intended to abandon the race and even made it 30 miles towards Sydney. Only then was the decision made not to give up. The single-crew is owned by husband and wife Jimi and Christy Clark. Christy Clark was part of the Comanchi crew. It was the first time in the race's history that a female owner's boat won it.
