Category Description

Lifting keel as an option is offered by many famous brands – Oceanis, DelphiaNautor's Swan, Wally, Oyster among others. This technical solution is in demand for boats of all sizes. The use of a lifting keel allows to reduce the draught of the boat when entering shallow water areas (or marinas with shallow depths) and maintain sufficient stability of the boat when sailing in large water. The lifting keel is a plus also when the boat is to be transported on a trailer..

The lifting keel can be constructed in different ways – swing or retractable. For example, the swing keel is installed on Southerly Yacht models so that the boat can go aground and anchor just off the coast or in the tidewater zone. The retractable keel, on the other hand, assumes the presence of a keel box in the boat hull. The lift mechanism can be hydraulically or mechanically driven. If the structure of the keel and the keel box is strong enough, the grounded yacht can be released simply by lifting the keel a few times in a row. With a fixed keel, it is much harder to refloat.

The use of a lifting keel, however, has its disadvantages. The presence of certain mechanisms in the construction of the keel itself creates additional risks when using the boat. In the case of hardcore grounding or collision with floating underwater objects, for instance, the lift mechanism may get damaged. Further, the keel box in a boat hull increases the risk of a leak.
