On Sunday, November 2, the Route du Rhum transatlantic race started in France. The first day of the race was also marked by the first collision: trimaran Sodebo Ultim crashed into a passing cargo ship. Skipper Thomas Coville was not injured, but the boat was damaged.

A total of 91 sailors, including renowned sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, are competing in the event.

Each of the racers will have to cover 3,542 nautical miles (the length of the journey from Saint Malo to Guadeloupe) alone. The estimated time it may take to complete the distance is 35 days (about 840 hours).

Competitors race on monohulls and multihulls sailing boats combined in different classes: Ultime, Multi50, IMOCA. Class40 and Rhum. Classes are based on vessel type and length.

The race can be tracked on the regatta website.
