The Polish crew, led by captain Piotr Kuzniar, set a new record. The sailors managed to reach the ice edge of the Ross Sea in Whale Bay, which is 100 nautical miles further south than the previous record.

The team sailed the 67-foot sailboat named Selma this far south. The exact coordinates of the new record are 78°43'926S 163°40'957'W.

Now the record-breaking hikers plan to climb the wall of ice all the way to the top of the glacier.

The previous record was set in 2012 by captain Sergei Nizovtsev and his international team, who reached 77 degrees south latitude on the 30-meter sailing ship Scorpius
