Francis Joyon, on the 31.5m trimaran IDEC Sport, has set the record for a solo crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. The French skipper left New York on July 6 at 23:30 and crossed the longitude of Cape Lizard in British Cornwall at 01:37 local time on Wednesday.

Joyon crossed the North Atlantic in 5 days, 2 hours and 7 minutes, surpassing his own 2013 record by 49 minutes.

The 61-year-old yachtsman had not specifically planned to set a new record; he was simply returning from a previous voyage and not waiting for the most favorable weather conditions.

Six months earlier, Jouayon and his five-man crew had set a record for circumnavigating the globe in 40 days.
