Comanche breaks transatlantic record for monohulls

Jim Clark's 100-foot sailboat Comanche has set a new single-hulled Atlantic Ocean crossing time record.

The boat covered 2,880 miles from New York City to Lizard Point in the UK in 5 days 14 hours 21 minutes and 25 seconds, more than a day ahead of the previous record holder, the Mari Cha IV, which set the transatlantic record in October 2003.

Since her launch in October 2013, Comanche has come first in all but one race in which she has participated and has set four transoceanic records.

To break the transatlantic record, the Comanche crew waited several weeks for the right weather window. The weather forecast promised strong winds and light waves all along the route, and this time Mother Nature did not let the yachtsmen down, allowing them to cross the Atlantic in record time, using only hand winches and hydraulics.
