From 26 to 28 August in St. Petersburg the first round of the European Champions Sailing League was held. 23 clubs from 12 countries took part in competitions on J/70 yachts.

According to the results of 42 races Berlin yacht club won. The compatriots of the North German Sailing Club are on the second place with 4 points advantage. Swiss yacht club from Geneva finished third.

«We did not expect to win. We came for a place among the 16 teams that will qualify for the final of the league, so to win is a surprise for us," said Stefan Mülle of the Berlin team. - We actually won thanks to a mistake made by our Hamburg rivals in the penultimate race. In general, the competition in St. Petersburg left a very pleasant impression: good winds, challenging waters and a very beautiful city».

St. Petersburg Yacht Club was the ninth in the standings after the first stage of the Sailing Champions League. The results of the Russian crew were adversely affected by one athlete's injury on the last day of the competition. The injured crew member was replaced, because of this the team had to adjust interaction again, said Vladimir Ikonnikov, helmsman of the Saint-Petersburg Yacht Club team.

«The conditions were really St. Petersburg: strong wind and sun - if on the first tack the right hand side "works", it is very likely that on the second tack the left hand side will win. The competition was not easy, but the main objective was achieved: we qualified for the Sailing Champions League final»," he said.

The second round of the League will be held in late September in Sardinia.
