The first port race of the Volvo Ocean Race circumnavigation will take place in Alicante on 14 October. The race village will open in the Spanish city three days earlier, on 11 October, and the start of the first leg of the round-the-world race from Alicante to Lisbon is scheduled for 22 October.

This year the Volvo Ocean Race will be even more open for spectators. The team bases will be built in such a way that ordinary visitors can communicate with the crews in an informal atmosphere. All repair works on a movable shipyard, The Boatyard, will also be visible to fans.

In addition, the organizers promise that the route of the current circumnavigation, with a total length of more than 45 thousand miles, includes three times more sailing in the cold and stormy Southern Ocean than in previous years.

In addition to Alicante and Lisbon, the Volvo Ocean Race will host Cape Town, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Auckland, Itajai, Newport, Cardiff, Gothenburg and The Hague, where the grand final will take place.
