Melbourne has been added to the list of cities that will host the 2017-2018 Volvo Ocean Race around the world.

Between Cape Town and Hong Kong, the Volvo Ocean Race will stop in the Australian city. The leg from Cape Town to Melbourne will thus be the third leg of the 45,000-mile circumnavigation, which this year includes three times as long a stretch in the Southern Ocean as in previous years' races.

VOR crews will stop in Melbourne for a week, but no port race will be held there. The organizers calculate that the participants of the round-the-world race will arrive in the Australian city by Christmas, so tourists will have one more reason to celebrate the holiday there.

The full route of the Volvo Ocean Race now includes 10 stages with stops in 12 cities on 6 continents.

The teams will leave Alicante in Spain on 22 October for Lisbon, Cape Town, Melbourne and Hong Kong. This will be followed by a move to Guangzhou, which will not be counted in the results table. From China, crews will leave for Auckland, then Brazil's Itajai, Newport (Rhode Island), Cardiff, Gothenburg and The Hague.
