«Silly sailors» blamed for death of Bahamas pig swimmers

About half of the population of famous swimming pigs from the Exuma area of the Bahamas has died. Their bodies were found in coastal waters. The Bahamas Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating the deaths of the pigs, a symbol of the Bahamas.

Although the official results of the investigation are not yet available, in an interview with local newspaper Tribune 242 society president Kim Aranha blamed the deaths of the pigs on «stupid sailors». She said unconscious boaters visiting the Bahamas have been drinking alcohol on the animals. She stressed that «silly sailors» should not be confused with tour operators who have always treated animals with care.

Kim Aranha also did not rule out that the pigs could have accidentally eaten some kind of poison, or that someone deliberately poisoned them, although «it is unclear why anyone would want to kill these cute animals».

Animal advocates estimate that there are currently seven or eight pig swimmers left on Exuma. However, the estimate of Wayde Nixon, one of the pig owners, is more optimistic: 15 surviving individuals.

«People bring in food, do what they want," Nixon said. - Some give the pigs beer, rum, ride them».

He said he has kept pigs on the island for 30 years and nothing like this has ever happened. But now the situation must obviously be brought under strict control. The Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources, V. Alfred Gray, said that the area where the pigs live should be restricted so that tourists can watch them swim and take pictures with them, but not feed them.
