Storm in Sotogrande severely damaged the RC44 yacht of the Russian team

A storm hit Sotogrande, Spain last weekend, damaging several boats participating in the RC44 Championship Tour stage.

The RC44 yachts weigh 3.5 tons. A crane couldn't get to them to move them to safety. Storm waves moved the yachts from their anchorage at the Sotogrande Yacht Club pier.

Among the victims is a boat from one of the Russian teams participating in the championship.

The yacht was so badly damaged that the team, whose name was not disclosed, may have to skip the regatta, writes Barracuda News citing reliable sources. The team is now looking for another boat to compete in.

Three Russian teams - Bronenosec Sailing Team of Vladimir Lyubomirov and Kirill Frolov, Katusha of Alexander Novoselov and Team Nika of Vladimir Prosikhin- are participating in the RC44 Championship Tour series. Sotogrande, scheduled for April 27-30, is the first of five rounds of the RC44 Championship Tour. One of series stages has status of world championship of RC44 class.
