A man was travelling alone from France to Portsmouth when the sail of his yacht was furled by a propeller. The engine was thus put out of action. This happened nearHorse Sand Fort in the Bay of Solent.

The yachtsman reported the incident to the Coastguard, who called in a volunteer crew from Gosport and Farnham Rescue Service (GAFIRS). The rescuers successfully towed the yacht into Portsmouth Harbour. The operation took a total of three hours.

GAFIRS is a community organisation funded by voluntary donations. It is completely independent of the RNLI, the Royal National Water Rescue Society. GAFIRS has responded to 44 calls this year, with 10 of those received in the last nine days.
