US Olympic Sailing Team athlete Bora Gulari lost parts of three fingers in a powerful rollover during training for the Nacra 17 World Championship.
Gulari's partner Helena Scutt was not injured. With the help of Argentinean yachtsman Santiago Lange, who entered the water immediately after the accident, Scutt pushed Nacra 17 back to shore.
Bora Gulari is now in a local hospital, recovering from surgery he underwent. Doctors predict he will be able to return to the sport in four weeks. The American yachtsman will miss the World Championships which start September 5 in La Grande-Motte, France.
«It's an unfortunate delay, but Helena and I will get through it. We will continue our campaign in preparation for Tokyo 2020," said Gulari. - I will definitely be back on the water as soon as I can, which will be in about a month».
Bora Gulari is a two-time Moth World Champion and 2009 Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. The Olympic prospects for foil catamarans, on the other hand, seem to look pale. Recently there has been an increasing number of requests to World Sailing (formerly known as ISAF) to run foil boat races at the Olympic Games, even though the organization's rules require Olympic boats to be tested and approved five years before the Games. So far the vetting has failed, it seems.
