The player of thevirtual version of the Volvo Ocean Race has beaten the winner of the second stage of the real regatta, the Spanish MAPFRE crew, by almost 13 hours.

While the participants of the famous Volvo Ocean Race sailing race are fighting in the rough ocean waters, a parallel battle is taking place in the virtual world, exactly replicating the route and conditions of the offshore regatta.

Rémy Quetstroey , a 62-year-old former computer hardware salesman from Waterloo, Belgium, has travelled from Lisbon, Portugal, toCape Town, South Africa, in 18 days, 11 hours 22 minutes and 16 seconds, beating almost 78,000 competitors on the internet game as well as 7 real teams.

The virtual yachtsman followed almost the same course as the Volvo Ocean Race fleet. Bypassing the equatorial lull zone from the west, he sailed south along the Brazilian coast to hit the latitude of the Roaring Forties. But the secret to Remy's success was that he went a little further east, so he ended up a few dozen miles closer to Cape Town.

«My strategy was to avoid following the big players clearly because, that way, I could never get ahead of them,- said the winner," I knewit was easier and quicker to get to Cape Town by taking a little west instead of going down strictly along the African coast. But in my opinion, the star players went too far».

That said, the Belgian gamer claims that he didn't have to spend 24 hours a day in front of the computer. He initially chose a strategy that worked, and according to it, programmed the course of his boat several times a day.

Today, the trend of sailing simulators is increasing in popularity and is reaching new levels.

International Federation of Sailing World S ailing announced the organization of the first-ever virtual world championship of sailing - eSailing.

The partner developer of the project is the creator of VOR - Virtual Regatta.

Virtual Yachtsmen World Championship will be held annually starting this year. During the season contestants will compete in different boats from windsurfers to 100-foot trimarans and then they will compete in the finals, the first of which will take place in Sarasota, USA this month.
