A sailing yacht collided with an oil tanker

The opening day of Cowes Week, one of the world's most prestigious and massive regattas, was marked by an unpleasant but spectacular incident: a sailing yacht collided with an oil tanker.

The 265m Hanne Knutsen was approaching Southampton when one of the yachts in the regatta, the 21m Atalanta, attempted to pass in front of the oil tanker. The tanker literally rammed the boat, throwing two sailboat crew members overboard. One of them was hospitalized with a moderate head wound, the other got off with a fright that, it seems to us, can hardly be called "light". The boat went overboard, caught the spinnaker on the tanker's anchor and eventually lost the mast. We managed to catch the moment on video:
