A 32-year-old British woman, who worked as a stewardess on board a 150-foot superyacht, was found dead in her stateroom a day after celebrating England's qualification for the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup.

Rebecca Boyle, a London resident, had taken a job on the superyacht La Polonia as chief stewardess just over a week ago.

At the time of the incident the vessel was moored in the port of Imperia, Italy.

On the night of the tragedy, Mrs Boyle and her colleagues were celebrating England's victory over Colombia in the FIFA World Cup 1/8 final in a local bar. A little later the company moved to a hot tub aboard La Polonia before the girl returned to her stateroom.

Colleagues sounded the alarm when Rebecca didn't show up for breakfast in the morning. They went in search of the girl, starting with her stateroom, where they found the body.

Police speculate that the cause of death was a head injury sustained in a fall from a ladder. Authorities can't yet assess what role alcohol played in what happened or whether it was an accident. An investigation is underway.

The 47-metre all-aluminium superyacht La Polonia was built in 1999 by Swiftships shipyard. The vessel underwent a global refit in 2014. The boat is valued at £6m with a weekly charter price of £150k.

La Polonia can accommodate up to 10 guests and 7 crew members on board. The yacht will be capable of speeds of up to 20 knots and will cruise at 12 knots for 3,000 nautical miles without refuelling.
