New Zealand company Sealegs has begun licensing its own patented technology for amphibious boats. The first licence has been granted to ASIS Boats of Dubai, a manufacturer of fast-moving inflatable boats.

ASIS Boats will equip the 6.5-meter boat with wheels, powered by a Volvo V6 225HP engine.

In addition to the Dubai-based company, New Zealand-based Smuggler Marine has also been licensed. It has combined the Powered by Sealegs system with rigid hull and inflatable side boats.

The current technology will be suitable for boats weighing up to 2.5 tons, but an updated version, suitable for heavier vehicles (up to 6.5 tons) is expected in June.

Also, until recently the system from Sealegs could only be used with smaller boats, but soon it will be available for boats around 12 meters (36 feet) in length.

With the opportunity to acquire a license to use the technology, other manufacturers are expected to bring water and land-based watercraft to the market.
