New life for old things

On the morning of April 16, the Vestas 11th Hour Racing team arrived in Itajai, Brazil, having traveled 1,600 miles in nine days under a mast built from an old lamppost. The aluminum pole, once a streetlight, was discovered by the team in the grass outside their own repair shed. In the Falkland Islands, where Vestas made an emergency stop after losing her mast in the Southern Ocean, there was no other alternative for VO65's armament. The normal mast length for yachts in this class is 30.30 metres. For comparison, the length of a street lamp post is between 9 and 15 metres.
