The final round of stage 8 of the Volvo Ocean Race was foggy both literally and figuratively: when Newport appeared on the horizon, the three leading teams were miles apart. Initially the yellow Brunel Sailing grabbed the lead, MAPFRE was breathing down their neck, with Vestas 11th Hour Racing coming on the heels of MAPFRE. However, just before the finish line, the red Spanish boat in almost flat conditions incredibly overtook the Dutch, scoring 8 points (Brunel had 2 points less). At the finish line, they were separated by just one hull!
