« Review of the Black Sea Fleet in 1849». Ivan Aivazovsky, 1886.
The painting depicts the heyday and swan song of the military sailing fleet, the peak of its power and technical perfection - just before the onset of the era of steam and fuel oil. The first signs of the coming revolution can already be seen in the lower right-hand corner - Emperor Nicholas I and the higher ranks are watching the parade from the wheeled frigate «» - one of the first steam-powered vessels of the Black Sea Fleet.
