The Barcolana regatta is being held in Trieste for the 46th consecutive time. This year there were almost 1900 boats on the start line. The overall record is close to being broken: in 2002 there were 1968 participants. Four Extreme 40s, a new trend at Barcolana which was originally conceived as a monohull race, have joined the Trieste Bay sailing event. The catamarans have not competed in the general competition but, to the delight of the 300,000-strong crowd, have chased each other along the shore. The winner of this mini-tournament was Oman Air. But in the big Barcolan the leader has not changed for the fifth year in a row. This is Esimit Europa 2.
