Eight countries battled in the North Sea off the German island of Sylt in the catamaran race Hobie World Cat.. During most of the four days, the crews raced in extreme conditions with wind gusts of up to 29 knots. The third day races were cancelled because of the forecasted 50 knots. Tipping over was a frequent occurrence, but there were no serious injuries.

The Australian team came out on top. The Hobie World Cat took place in the twentieth days of August.
