Police in the Polynesian kingdom of Tonga discovered a yacht carrying 204 kilograms of cocaine and the body of a man. JeReVe ran aground near the Vavaou archipelago(video).
The value of the drug shipment exceeded $121 (!) million.
The Australian police believe that a Latin American mafia may be involved in the mysterious case. Back in August, it was reported by American colleagues that a certain criminal organization had sent a yacht loaded with drugs from Ecuador to Australia. Australian police officers, along with representatives of Tonga, followed the vessel for some time, but it then disappeared from view.
Forensic investigators will now attempt to establish the cause of death and it may be possible that the results will help police to trace the perpetrators.
